Which Antler Chew is Best for Your Dog?

Which Antler Chew is Best for Your Dog?

When selecting an antler chew for your dog, there are a handful of things to consider to ensure you pick the right one. What size is your dog? Is your dog older or younger? Do they love a challenge or do they need something a little easier to keep them engaged?

We have raised many dogs over the years and, as a result, have been exposed to all different types of chewers. We have learned that when you match the right antler to the right dog, something magic happens. It keeps your dog busy.

Below is a breakdown of the types of antlers we offer here at RidgeRunner:

Whole Elk Antlers

Our high-quality Whole Elk antlers are the perfect go-to chew for moderate and occasional chewers. Elk antlers have a thinner outer core compared to Deer and Moose antlers. This makes them a good choice for dogs that enjoy chewing but don’t need too much of a challenge.

Upon request, we can provide Elk antler chews from the base (which is denser and longer-lasting) or from the upper part of the antler (which is softer and easier to chew).

Split Elk Antlers

Split Elk antlers are essentially Whole Elk antlers that have been cut in half to expose the delicious, nutrient-rich marrow inside. They are terrific for dogs new to antlers, tentative or occasional chewers, puppies, and older dogs.

Quarter Split antlers have marrow exposed on two sides, making them extra enticing for picky chewers.

Half-cut antlers have the irresistible marrow exposed on just one side, which makes them last a bit longer.

Split Elk antlers may not last as long if you have a more aggressive chewer. Take this into consideration when choosing your antler style.

Elk Antler Medallions

Cut from the base of an Elk antler, Medallions contain both the densest and most marrow-rich part of the antler. They are long-lasting for even the most vigorous chewers, and digging for the tasty marrow will give your dog hours of entertainment.

Medallions are offered in Large, Extra Large, Jumbo, and Giant sizes.

Deer Antlers

Our Deer antler chews come from naturally shed antlers from wild Colorado mule deer. We prefer mule deer over the more commonly found whitetail because they are a bit easier on your pup's teeth. That said, they do have a hard outer core and are perfect for aggressive chewers who need a greater challenge than our Whole Elk antlers can offer.

Customers can request a denser cut from the base of the antler or a slightly less dense piece from the upper antler.

Moose Antlers

All of our Moose antler chews come from wild, free-range Alaskan moose. Due to their sheer size, Moose antlers provide a wide range of options for dogs.

We sell Moose antler chews in 3 varieties to meet the chewing habits of all dogs: Moose Paddles, Split Moose, and Moose Tines.

Moose Paddles are the least dense chew we carry and have exposed marrow on multiple sides of the antler.

Split Moose are cut from the base sections of the Moose antler. They are similar to Split Elk, but denser.

Moose Tines are the toughest chew in our lineup. The thick outer layer and dense, tasty marrow inside are perfect for the most vigorous chewers in your pack.

Selecting the Right Antler Chew

The needs of your pup may change throughout their life, so it's a good idea to keep evaluating their chewing habits. Some dogs, like our Labradors, Alice and Betty, will most likely need large, challenging chews their whole lives. Others may need a challenge only during their teething phase and can switch to easier options later.

When in doubt, we do recommend sizing up. A smaller dog can always handle a larger chew; however, an undersized antler for a more aggressive chewer will not last long. If you are unsure of which antler chew is right for your pup, check out our handy Antler Size Guide for more information.
